October 2026 Moment in Nature

There are so many good things to appreciate in October and the last of the flowers is certainly one of them. Tucked away, hiding from the deer, I've got several asters blooming now. They are worth appreciating and if you're in an aster mood, I've written about them before.

This month I will celebrate a brave - and an apparently deer-resistant - flower that is out there with zero protection: Southern obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana ssp. praemorsa), blooming for all to see. I have this plant in several areas, apparently planted by the previous owner. In most places it is not getting enough sun to bloom.

In a part-sun area that I hope to turn into a pollinator garden, there are a few plants that started blooming this week. Their bright pink blooms were a vibrant flag visible from a distance, and I am glad to have them. I've had a lot of deer pressure lately and things are getting munched in this area. My final garden solution will probably need a fence. In the meantime, obedient plant is getting the job done. #amomentinnature
